Indoor Hockey at Melville
Updated October 2019
NEW Indoor Quick Sticks for Years 3 to 6
Registrations close 27 October
We are very excited to introduce our new indoor hockey program for our younger members and their friends! Quick Sticks is open to all children in Years 3 to 6. While first preference will be given to existing Melville Juniors, we are very happy to welcome players from other clubs, and especially children with no prior hockey experience. Quick Sticks is the perfect introduction to hockey: it’s fast, fun and safe! No hitting, no raised balls, played on a small court in teams of six. Each session will consist of a training session to teach the skills and rules of indoor hockey, led by our national and state representatives, followed by game play.
- WHERE: Lakeland Senior High School Gym, South Lake
- WHEN: Sunday mornings, 9.30-11.00am
- PROGRAM DATES: Sunday 3 November – Sunday 8 December (six sessions)
- COST: $100 per player ($190 for two children from same family, $270 for three children from same family)
- EQUIPMENT: All players will require a mouthguard, as well as a glove to protect their left hand (a cricket batting glove will suffice if you have one, otherwise indoor hockey gloves are available at Hockey International or Just Hockey). Players will also need an indoor hockey stick and shin pads, which we will have available for players to borrow each week if necessary.
We have a very proud tradition in indoor hockey at Melville, with a number of our members representing WA or coaching WA state Open and Junior teams. Ash Ranford and Matt Tate are travelling to Russia in December with the Aust U21 Indoor team, while Dylan Forbes was selected in the Aust U18 Indoor team.
Indoor hockey is very similar to outdoor, but is played on a wood or vinyl floor, slightly bigger than a basketball court, with wooden boards along the side-line to prevent the ball going out. No hitting is allowed, and the ball may not be raised off the ground at all (except for a shot on goal), making it a safe sport for young players. Teams can be up to 12 players with 5 field players and a goalkeeper on the court at any one time. It is a fast and furious game, requires good teamwork, is great for improving stick skills and tackling, and is a fun way to keep up your fitness over the summer months.
2019/2020 Junior Season
This year there will be Club Championships for U13 (mixed), U15 Boys and Girls & U18 Boys and Girls. This will be held over 3 days at the Mundaring Indoor Facility on Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th of October.
The indoor season will once again be held at Lumen Christi College. The season will run between Friday 18th October until Sunday 15th December. U15s and U18s play on Friday nights, while the Under 13s play on Sunday mornings.
So, it is now time to get the teams organised. The first part of this process is for you to confirm your son / daughter’s availability for Club Championships and the Season (please note that you can choose to take part in one or both competitions).
Please register your interest no later than Friday 20th September 2019.
